What is Adaptive Fitness?


Adaptive, or medical fitness, is an area of fitness that reaches beyond the mainstream approach to exercise. This includes exercise modalities that are specialized for the individual who has unique needs. This may include a chronic diagnosis such as Parkinson’s or MS, but also includes sport specific training, exercise coaching for pre or post operative needs, non-pharmaceutical pain management, pregnancy, morbid obesity, and so much more. At Benefitness, we apply exercise science principles to achieve greater health, no matter what journey you’re on.

The common denominator for children, pre or post pregnancy, differently abled individuals, and chronic health conditions is that they ALL fall into the category of adaptive fitness.


Adaptive fitness covers any individual who is considered to be a special population. The key approach to exercise with special or adaptive populations is having a solid comprehensive understanding of human anatomy, biomechanics, and how certain diagnoses or specific health conditions impact movement.


We have replaced ‘no pain – no gain’ with ‘train – don’t strain’. This allows us to work within a person’s abilities and celebrate their strengths so that they can meet their health and wellness goals.


The fitness industry is working more closely with the medical community every day. This includes credentialing bodies (e.g., those that provide national fitness certifications) to include academic and practical rigor that provides greater training for fitness professionals, giving them the opportunity to increase their scope of practice and work safely with those with different physical considerations.


Movement is Medicine


Exercise not only helps the physical (or physiological) body, but also helps individuals with psychological aspect of their well-being. Safely conducted exercise reduces many clinical risks ranging from cardiac disease to pulmonary and metabolic disorders. Exercise also increases hormones responsible for mood and mindset which can reduce stress.


There are so many wonderful success stories experienced at Benefitness, it’s nearly impossible to select a single one. We’ve seen members reclaim their health and independence, and find joy in movement. When individuals enter Benefitness they are consumed with hope. The coaching staff at Benefitness has a vastly robust and diverse background. While some coaches have expertise in strength and conditioning, others have earned achievements in areas such as traditional Chinese medicine, martial arts, posture correction specialty, cancer exercise, boxing, youth sports, yoga, Pilates, Dementia training, and so much more. The coaches love to continuously expand in their knowledge which is evident with their consistent support of one another and the members they serve.


Custom Workout Plans


Benefitness offers a wide range of individual services that are designed to help the member succeed. During the intake process, the coaches conduct detailed interviews with the members. In this session, the coach is carefully listening to health history, physical and/or cognitive limitations, desired goals, and areas of interest. When all of this information is put together, the coach will then customize their ‘exercise prescription’ which will include check points to ensure member satisfaction and steps toward goal achievement.
